Heating up the fairness doctrine!

By CHARLES HURT, BUREAU CHIEF
January 23, 2009

WASHINGTON -- President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.

"You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done," he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.

One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.

He's trying to include Republicans and has given them a seat at the table. But I guess he's letting them know that they'll have a seat and input if they are sincere about wanting to be bipartisan and actually accomplish something together. Rush on the other hand is publicly hoping for his failure. Obama does not support the fairness doctrine but Republicans love to get worked up over it anyway.

*pointing* Ditto what Jim said.

I get the feeling that there will be people who will pretty much twist Obama's intent on just about everything he says. I think his statements, thus far, have been pretty much cut and dry.. but where there's a will, there's a way.

Yes, BO does support the Fairness Doctrine but is savvy enough to know that he can't say so. When the debate comes it'll be in the form of "locality." Radio stations must be more attuned to their local audiences, you see. The nutroots and congressional Dems will, sooner or later, push the issue. The left, and includes Obama, can't tolerate dissent.

And let me address Jim's comment about inclusion. Bipartisan means Republicans acting like Democrats, nothing more, nothing less. Congressional Dems aren't in the least interested in hearing from Republicans which Sen Leahy just demonstrated this past week with his little tantrum over the Geithner confirmation hearing. Recall when W did make overtures and got his hand bitten by Kennedy. And recall McDermott's and Bonior's trip, all expenses borne by no less than Saddam Hussein, to Iraq. And Madam Speaker's back stabbing trip to Syria. And WJC and any number of other Dems criticizing W on foreign soil. You will not see Republicans behave in such a manner - it's just not in their DNA.

Republicans did, from 1994 to 2006, make an effort out of necessity - that necessity being pilloried in the press for not doing so. Still, they got little credit. Had they been smart, they would have treated the Dems as they'll be treated as the minority by the Dems.

Limbaugh's response.

Lee: This is what it's all about. There's a quote in the movie "Three Days Of The Condor" = "You've done more damage than you know!"

More lib/dems should see that movie.
