Naaa ... VN8 it's just another free-money hair-brained scheme. He can't justify yet another bureaucracy which duplicates the efforts of already existing agencies.
He'll be like Carter. Done in 4 years and off to build inner city schools ... and negotiate with terrorists.
It's called Homeland Security.
DHS was established in 2002. It currently has a $50 billion budget annualy and its effectiveness is tied to how well in integrates existing agencies into its mission. This is primarily an administrative and constitutional task, not requiring throngs of additional civilian-booted thugs.
This ground has been covered before, in 2004, to the credit of democrats who actually did some bipartisan work to fund DHS as well as give it some teeth (e.g. the INS MOU) (Lee is gonna correct me on this)
OM1C is right about DHS.
Actually, I think BO was talking out his rear. Taken literally, he is proposing about a several hundred thousand man federal police force which will never happen. And in fairness to him, he knows it. What bugs me is that he commits a Bidenesque gaffe and gets a free pass by the press. So far as I know, no reporter questioned him on this. Would a Republican have received such treatment?
I'm not sure what it takes to choke fairness out of the media. I would love to have heard Obama get questioned about that quote. Why in the world would he say something as preposterous as this?

OK, the American people have supposedly spoken. Let's dig deep. It took four years of President Carter for a man of great character, President Ronald W. Reagan to step forward and lead us and had we not suffered fiscally during President Carter's administration, we might not have seen President Reagan's greatness. Somewhere in the darkness, someone will step forward to lead us out of this ultimate downhill spiral that we are headed for. Who will it be, only time will tell. VN8
